Diplomas > Home Economics Specialization

The Home Economics specialization is a 30 credit in-service program designed to help teachers extend and deepen their knowledge of theory and pedagogy related to the teaching of home economics in the schools. The Diploma program serves those who wish to strengthen the current subject area they teach or wish to add a second subject specialization. Occasionally, the Home Economics Diploma is offered as an off-campus cohort program. Core courses:

  • HMED 440*; HMED 441*; HMED 314 or 414; HMED 465 (A-D)**; CUST 306, CUST 424 or CUST 412

Elective courses:

  • Approved courses in the Faculty of Arts (for example: Family Studies, e.g., 314, 316; Sociology, e.g., 320, 342, 324, 364, 430***, 415; Women’s Studies 300***, 320; Theatre, e.g., 356)
  • Approved courses in the Faculty of Land and Food Systems (for example: Food, Nutrition and Health 340, 355, 402)
  • Approved courses at Kwantlen University+ (for example: FSDP 4101; 4105 ); Thompson Rivers University/Open Learning (Sociology 430; 431++) [NOTE: a letter of permission is required, contact the Teacher Education Office]
  • Approved courses in the Faculty of Education (for example: ARTE 305; CUST 396; CUST 307, 308; HMED 306, 465)

    * These courses may be offered on-line through EPLT.
    ** There are several HMED 465 courses as they are special topic courses.  At least one is available on-line.  You may take more than one HMED 465.
    *** May be Offered on-line through Distance Education UBC.
    + Courses vary and are usually offered as one-week summer institutes.
    ++These are distance education courses.
