Art
Education Diploma
A small component of our overall
program in art education is the faculty commitment
to in-servicing art teachers. Whenever possible,
faculty encourage practicing teachers to upgrade
their qualifications by returning to UBC for
additional courses. Students choosing to take
an Art Education diploma must take 18 credits
of courses in art education numbered 300 or
above, with the remaining 12 credits coming
from any approved courses in the Faculties of
Arts and/or Education.
Diploma students take any of the
courses in art education listed below:
Core Courses: (18 credits)
-
ARTE 303 (6) Ceramics in Art Education
-
ARTE 305 (6) Design in Art Education
The first two courses listed above also
point to the collegial relationship between
the Visual Arts program and the Art Education
program. These courses are open to fine
arts students wishing to explore ceramics
and textile design, both of which are
unavailable to them in the Visual Arts
Department in the Arts Faculty.
-
ARTE 400 (2-6) Studies in Art Education
Studio Area (a directed studies course)
-
ARTE 401, 402, 403, 404, 405, 406, 425,
426, 441, EDCP 321, EDCP 322

Visual
and Performing Arts in Education Diploma
Diploma students may wish to take a Visual
and Performing Arts in Education program in
which case students take courses from three
of the four arts disciplines. Should a student
choose art as one focus, he/she is required
to take from 6-22 credits in art education
out of the total program of 30 credits.
The diploma program in visual
and performing arts in education may be just
the kind of cross-disciplinary or integrated
approach you have been looking for. It is designed
to achieve breadth in the arts by offering combinations
of art, dance, drama, and music courses. Students
select courses from at least three of these
arts or arts education areas (for a total of
30 credits). Choose from all of the art and
music education courses listed in the previous
descriptions (see above and Music Education)
and round these experiences out with courses
in dance and/or drama education.
Courses that are available in
dance include PHYS. ED 340 "Popular Dance and
Culture" and PHYS. ED 343 "Dance for Children."
Or if you prefer, consider courses in drama
education such as ENGLISH EDUCATION 335 "Drama
in Education," or EDUCATION 435 "Advanced Studies
in English Education."
For those who are interested,
a wide variety of Theatre courses may be accessed
through the Department of Theatre and Film.
Any 300 level or higher courses may be taken
in the Theatre department. Topics cover a range
of possibilities including speech and movement,
scenery, set design, costume design, direction,
acting, stage management and film studies.
You can take an interesting combination
of courses in Art, Drama, Music and Dance Education
to create a unique, fully integrated diploma.
