We experienced being outside and we learned a lot about how to maintain plants and what’s good and not good about things. It just helped us be more aware. … We learned lots about harvesting as well and growing. You have to really take care of it. And the plants you are growing and sometimes …not everything works out… It is not like do the planting and then leave it until harvest time. So you have to be sort of organized and committed.

The Intergenerational Landed Learning on the Farm Project is a unique initiative of the Department of Curriculum and Pedagogy, Faculty of Education, University of British Columbia, with its focus on agriculture and food as the link between a healthy environment and human well-being. By uniting generations in a community learning initiative this program illustrates the values of lifelong learning, community mindedness, ecological and social citizenship, and civic responsibility. These are values that are difficult to communicate in schools and classrooms and are best learned through personal and community experience.

LANDED LEARNING PROJECT WINS COMMUNITY CHAMPIONS AWARD

April 30, 2009. There is no other group that enjoys coming to the UBC Farm more than children. These kids from Tyee Elementary School had so much fun visiting the farm throughout the year that they decided to nominate the UBC Faculty of Education-run Intergenerational Landed Learning Project for a BC Hydro Community Champions Award. The project won the $500 prize and that meant the kids got to come back to the farm again to help present the award-and of course learn about growing food and environmental responsibility!
